When to Switch to Flower: Reading Your Plant's Signals

🗓️ March 20, 2026 ·⏱️ 8 min

Switch cannabis to flower when plants are 50% of their target height, have 5+ alternating nodes, and show pre-flowers. Most growers flip at 4–8 weeks of veg for indoor grows.

Bottom line: Switch to flower when your plant is 50% of its target final height, has 5+ alternating nodes, and shows pre-flowers. For most indoor grows, this happens at 4–8 weeks of veg. Flip the lights to 12/12.

The flip from veg to flower is the most important decision in a cannabis grow. Flip too early and you lose yield. Flip too late and your plant outgrows your space.

This guide shows you exactly what to look for.

How the Flowering Trigger Works

Cannabis is a photoperiod plant. It reads light to decide when to flower.

In nature, summer = long days (18+ hours of light). Plants stay in veg. Fall = shorter days (12 hours of light or less). Plants flower.

Indoor growers control this with a timer:

  • Veg: 18 hours light / 6 hours dark
  • Flower: 12 hours light / 12 hours dark

When you flip to 12/12, you tell the plant: it’s fall, make buds.

Autoflowers are different. They flower based on age, not light. Skip to the autoflower section below if you’re growing autos.

The 3 Signs Your Plant Is Ready to Flip

Look for all 3 before you flip.

Sign 1: Pre-Flowers Appear

Pre-flowers are tiny structures that show up where branches meet the main stem. This is called the “node.”

Female pre-flower: Two white hairs (pistils) that look like a tiny pair of antennae. Sometimes a small green structure under them.

Male pre-flower: A small ball or cluster of balls with no white hairs.

Pre-flowers show up at 4–6 weeks of veg in most strains. They appear at the 4th or 5th node on the main stem.

Why this matters: Pre-flowers mean the plant is sexually mature. It’s ready to flower. Flipping before pre-flowers appear produces smaller yields because the plant isn’t ready to respond.

Sign 2: Alternating Nodes

Look at how branches grow off the main stem.

Early veg: Nodes grow in opposite pairs. Two branches come out at the same height, one on each side.

Mature plant: Nodes alternate. One branch on the left, then one branch on the right, then one on the left. They stagger.

This alternating growth is a clear sign of sexual maturity. Most plants hit this stage at 3–5 weeks of veg.

Sign 3: Plant Is at 50% of Target Height

Plants stretch 50–100% in height after you flip to 12/12. This is called the “flowering stretch.”

If your grow space allows 4 feet of plant height and you want to use all of it, flip when the plant is 2 feet tall. It will reach 3–4 feet by the time stretch ends.

If you flip at 3 feet and the plant stretches 100%, you hit the ceiling at 6 feet. That’s a problem.

Know your strain’s stretch. Indica-dominant strains stretch 25–50%. Sativa-dominant strains stretch 50–100% or more. Ask your seed bank or check strain reviews.

How Long to Veg Before Flipping

This depends on your goals. Here are the most common approaches.

Short Veg: 3–4 Weeks

Best for:

  • Sea of Green (SOG) grows with many small plants
  • Small spaces
  • Autoflower-style fast cycles
  • Growers who want faster harvests

Result: Smaller plants, smaller yields per plant. But faster cycles and more harvests per year.

Requirements: Start with clones or more established seedlings. 3 weeks of veg from seed leaves plants small.

Standard Veg: 4–8 Weeks

Best for: Most indoor home growers with 4–6 foot spaces.

Result: 1–3 ounces per plant in a basic setup. More with training.

Most growers in a standard 4×4 tent flip at 4–6 weeks. Plants reach 12–18 inches tall and have 6–10 node sites.

Long Veg: 8–16 Weeks

Best for:

  • Large spaces (8×8 tents and bigger)
  • Maximum yield per plant
  • SCROG (Screen of Green) setups
  • Experienced growers

Result: Very large plants. 3–8+ ounces per plant with proper training.

Long veg is overkill in most home setups. More veg time doesn’t automatically mean more yield — canopy coverage and light intensity matter more.

Size Guide: When to Flip Based on Space

2×2 (or 2×4)10–12 inches18–24 inches
3×314–18 inches24–36 inches
4×418–24 inches32–48 inches

These are estimates for indica-dominant strains. Add 25–50% more stretch for sativa-heavy strains.

How to Flip: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Check the 3 signs

  • Pre-flowers visible at nodes ✓
  • Alternating node growth ✓
  • Plant at 50% of target height ✓

Step 2: Final training Do any last topping, LST adjustments, or defoliation before you flip. Once in flower, major training stops at week 3.

Step 3: Change your timer Set lights to 12 hours on, 12 hours off.

Important: The 12 hours of darkness must be completely dark. Zero light interruptions. Even a flashlight through a vent for 30 seconds can cause light stress. Check for light leaks with the tent closed. Your eye should adjust to complete darkness.

Step 4: Clean up lower growth Remove the lowest 25–30% of growth from the plant. These are small branches and leaves that receive little light. They pull energy and rarely produce quality buds. Removing them helps the plant focus energy on the top canopy.

Step 5: Optional — reduce humidity Veg humidity: 50–70% Flower humidity: 40–50% Late flower (last 2 weeks): 30–40%

Lower humidity in flower reduces the risk of bud rot (botrytis).

What Happens After the Flip

Week 1–2: Stretch Begins

The plant still looks like it’s in veg. It keeps growing fast. Node sites stack quickly.

Nothing special to do except:

  • Adjust light height as plant grows
  • Watch for males if growing regular seeds
  • Keep humidity in the 50–60% range

Week 2–3: Pre-Flowers Become Real Flowers

White pistils multiply at every node site. You can see small bud sites forming.

If you grew from regular seeds, sex is obvious now. Remove any males immediately. One male can pollinate an entire room of females and ruin the harvest.

Week 3–4: Stretch Slows

Most of the height gain is done. The plant commits to bud production.

This is when you stop most training. The plant needs to focus on building flowers now.

Week 5–8: Flower Development

Buds swell, trichomes form, and pistils change color. This is the main flowering phase.

Feeding increases. Phosphorus and potassium become the key nutrients. Reduce nitrogen.

Week 8–12+: Final Ripening

Depends on strain. Most indicas finish at 8–9 weeks of flower. Most sativas finish at 10–12 weeks or longer.

Check the Harvest Timing guide when trichomes start to cloud over.

Common Mistakes When Flipping

Flipping Too Early

Signs you flipped too early:

  • No pre-flowers visible
  • Nodes still grow in pairs, not alternating
  • Plant is under 12 inches tall

What happens: Slower flower development. Smaller buds. Some plants won’t even flower properly — they stay in a half-veg, half-flower state.

Fix: If you haven’t been in 12/12 for more than a few days, switch back to 18/6 and wait. Let the plant mature.

Flipping Too Late

Signs:

  • Plant already outgrowing your space
  • Veg cycle beyond 10 weeks

What happens: Plant hits the ceiling during stretch. Light burns the top canopy. Lower buds get almost no light.

Fix for overgrown plants: Super crop the tops (bend and pinch main stems to fold them over) before flipping. This technique reduces height and adds extra bud sites.

Light Leaks

A single tiny pinhole of light during the dark period can delay or disrupt flowering. Some plants show signs of light stress (hermaphrodite pollen sacs mixed with female flowers).

How to check: After closing the tent, wait 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust. Look for any glowing edges, seams, or holes.

Common leak spots: Where power cords exit the tent, zipper corners, and exhaust fan openings.

Tape any light leaks with electrical tape or black gorilla tape.

Autoflowers: No Flip Needed

Autoflowers flower automatically based on age. You don’t change the light schedule.

Most growers run autos at 18/6 light for the entire grow (some run 20/4).

When do autos start flowering? Autos typically start showing flowers at 3–5 weeks from seed. This happens regardless of light schedule.

Signs an auto is entering flower:

  • White pistils appear at node sites
  • Strong terpene smell begins
  • Upward growth slows

What to do: Nothing. Keep the same light schedule. Adjust feeding to a flower nutrient formula when you see bud sites forming.

Don’t try to extend veg in autos by keeping 18/6 light. It won’t work. The plant flowers on its own schedule.

Training Before the Flip: Maximum Your Canopy

The flip is the deadline for major training. Here’s what to do before you flip:

Topping

Cut the main growing tip at the 4th or 5th node. This creates 2 main colas instead of 1.

Do this at 3–4 weeks of veg. Give the plant 7–10 days to recover before flipping.

FIMing

A less severe version of topping. Pinch the growing tip (don’t cut all the way). Creates 4 growth tips instead of 2.

LST (Low Stress Training)

Bend the main stem and branches to grow horizontal. Use soft wire ties or bending clips. Creates a flat, even canopy where every branch gets top-shelf light.

Start LST at week 2–3 of veg. Continue throughout veg. Stop major adjustments at week 3 of flower.

SCROG (Screen of Green)

Install a screen above the plant. Weave branches through as the plant grows. When 80% of screen is covered, flip.

Best for single-plant grows in larger tents. Maximizes light coverage.

Nutrient Adjustments at the Flip

Switch from veg nutrients to bloom nutrients.

Veg nutrients: High nitrogen (N). Promotes green leafy growth.

Bloom nutrients: High phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Promotes bud development.

Most base nutrient lines have a clear “grow” and “bloom” formula. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule starting at week 1 of flower.

Don’t stop nitrogen completely right away. Early flower still needs some nitrogen. Taper it off by week 3–4, not immediately.

Quick Reference Checklist

Before flipping:

  • Pre-flowers visible at 4th–5th node
  • Alternating node growth confirmed
  • Plant at 50% of target final height
  • Final training done (topping, LST adjustments)
  • No light leaks in tent
  • Timer set to 12/12

Week 1 after flip:

  • Monitor stretch — adjust light height daily
  • Check for males (if regular seeds)
  • Keep dark period completely uninterrupted
  • Begin transitioning to bloom nutrients

Final Word

The flip is straightforward. Look for pre-flowers. Watch for alternating nodes. Keep the plant at 50% of target height.

Flip the lights to 12/12. Seal every light leak. Switch to bloom nutrients.

Plants that go into flower at the right time and right size produce the best yields. Take the extra week to let the plant mature. It’s worth it.
